I'm pleased to announce that thanks to the hard work of Antonio Rull, I will shortly* be releasing a localisation update to Pixaria which will include a full Spanish translation of the software front end. The addition of Spanish means that Pixaria now has multilingual support for the major languages of Europe, North America and Latin America.
Although this is obviously great news for speakers of the currently supported languages, Pixaria still lacks support for many major Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Urdu, Arabic and Hebrew as well as Russian and other Eastern European languages.
If you or someone you know is fluent in any of these languages and fancies having a go with the translation, let me know and there could be a free copy of Pixaria in it for you!
*The Spanish language update will be available this weekend and details will be posted here when it becomes available.
Permalink del.icio.us Digg itJust a quick posting today to let everyone know that Pixaria Gallery 2.6.1 is now available and is a recommended upgrade for all users of version 2.6.0. Although this update changes a lot of files, most of these are in the internals of Pixaria so if you follow the file change log, you should find the upgrade fairly painless.
The main change in this update is a modification to the thumbnail proxy PHP script which will bring major performance improvements for all users. This has been achieved by eliminating all database calls and several unnecessary filesystem calls when thumbnail images are displayed.
Other points to note for this release are a number of bug fixes in the Flash image upload tool and improved user interfaces for some of the admin control panels and image editing screens. Please request your update and let me know your feedback by e-mailing info@pixaria.com.
Permalink del.icio.us Digg itNow that version 2.6 is out there, I wanted to post a quick update on my development roadmap for Pixaria over the next few weeks. I'm increasingly keen to share my progress and plans for Pixaria because I know how much it helps everyone plan their website maintenance work. If there's more specific information that you would find useful, let me know...
In the short term, I plan to release a minor update (2.6.1) in the next few days which will address a few minor niggles that people have identified since the weekend's release of version 2.6 and which also tidies a few other bits up that I didn't have time to include.
The most significant change here is that the forms for the general settings, appearance and search administration control panels have been overhauled to use a new, tabbed interface which will hopefully make them easier to use.
The same tab approach has also been applied to the forms for editing individual images and batches of images. In the process of doing this work, I've also had the opportunity to fix few minor bugs and quirks in both of these forms. For example, the individual image edit form now has a facility to edit the image owner - something that was previously only present in the batch form.

I expect to release 2.6.1 before the end of this week and for those worried about template modifications which might be needed to upgrade, there will be no changes to any front end theme templates.
Looking further ahead to the next month or so, I'm planning another milestone release (version 2.7) to take advantage of some of the internal changes I made in version 2.6...
Under the hood, version 2.6 added preliminary support for using ImageMagick to resize images which will be a major improvement to anyone who has run into the problem of PHP running out of memory when resizing large image files. Obviously, your server will need ImageMagick installed to make use of this but most hosting companies provide it these days and Pixaria will be able to pick which system (GD or ImageMagick) is available.
Another interesting addition included with 2.6 is support for GPS coordinates in EXIF data. If you're using the new Flash upload tool to import images with EXIF GPS data, then this will already be being saved in your library. To take advantage of this, I intend to add support for Google maps in the front end and admin areas of Pixaria in version 2.7. It is also possible that I will be able to include the facility to search for images within a given radius of a specific location on Earth though I don't yet know how feasible this is. If you have any ideas related to this, I'd be interested to hear them.
Finally, two more features I'm looking to add to version 2.7 are support for tooltip style image previews when the mouse cursor hovers over a thumbnail and Cooliris support via MediaRSS links. The groundwork for both of these is more or less done so they should be fairly easy to add.
If anyone has any thoughts on any of these plans, I'm always happy to discuss by e-mail at info@pixaria.com.
Permalink del.icio.us Digg itSince the release of Pixaria 2.6 on Saturday, a couple of bugs have been identified in the news blog, Flash uploader and when running the software in a subdirectory of your website domain. To address these issues, I've prepared a patch file which contains six updated PHP files that fix these issues.
The files which need to be replaced are:
All copies of Pixaria 2.6 shipped as of today include these bug fixes so you only need to apply the patched files if you're having problems. You can download the patch file as a zip archive here.
If you have any questions, please let me know at info@pixaria.com.
Permalink del.icio.us Digg itIt's been a long time in development but, I'm pleased to announce that Pixaria Gallery version 2.6 is now available. This update is an important step on the road to version 3.0, delivering an entirely new web based image upload utility, powered by Adobe Flash, Yahoo! UI and some nifty AJAX to offer the simplest image uploading imaginable.

As part of the transition to Pixaria 3.0, this update also includes the first pieces of a new user experience for the admin area of the script and adds some internal components that will pave the way for quicker delivery new features over the next few releases.
Another important change in this update is a set of enhancements to the way pages and images are served which will make it easier for search engine robots like the GoogleBot to index your site and the images on it. These changes include support for canonical URLs for image pages and search engine friendly image URLs.
To see full details of the changes in this update, please take a look at the release notes and to find out which files have changed, take a look at the file change log.
Permalink del.icio.us Digg itI've been in contact with my hosting company (Demon Internet) about the e-mail sending problems I'm having. It seems to be mainly European ISPs that are rejecting e-mail from info@pixaria.com and their network abuse department is currently investigating the problem which they believe may be related to badly configured servers at the recipient end.
If anyone needs to get in touch with me, e-mails sent to info@pixaria.com should still arrive but I may reply using a different e-mail address such as jamie.longstaff@me.com.
Hopefully, this issue will be resolved very shortly.
Permalink del.icio.us Digg itI'm having some intermittent problems with my e-mail server being blacklisted on a couple of Spam lists at the moment and this is causing some e-mails I've sent to be bounced back. Where possible, I've tried to re-send e-mails from my 'me.com' e-mail address but some may have escaped the net.
If you've tried to get in touch and not had a reply, please let me know.
P.S. Pixaria 2.6 is nearly done which I know a few people have been waiting for with baited breath. There's been a big delay getting this release done because it's quite a big update but it will be worth the wait!
